Moroni is the smallest of ports with the largest of chaperones: behind the whitewashed Friday Mosque and the coral-stone medina rises Karthala, a volcano whose summit caldera is among the widest active craters on Earth. The Comoros are the perfume isles — the world's ylang-ylang essence begins in these distilleries, with vanilla and cloves riding the same trade winds — and the harbor still works at dhow scale, lateen sails tacking home at dusk exactly as the postcard insists.

The traveller loses an unhurried morning in the medina's carved doors and cool alleys; greets the old mosque at the port, the country's most photographed patience; climbs — with a guide, over two days if fully — toward Karthala's lunar rim; sniffs the ylang harvest where the flowers are wilted into gold; and salutes the sea's oldest tenant: the coelacanth, the lobe-finned 'living fossil' science mourned as sixty-five million years gone until it surfaced alive — and these waters proved to be its home.

The Guide's practical counsel, honestly: the Comoros run at island tempo on simple infrastructure — cash is king, schedules are suggestions, ferries between islands obey weather first —; the political sea has been calmer than its old reputation, and the traveller who checks current counsel and travels patient finds one of the least-visited, most fragrant corners of the Indian Ocean; and Mohéli's marine park — turtles nesting, whales passing — is the reward for the extra boat.
