Lilongwe is two towns holding hands across a forest: the Old Town of markets and minibuses down by the river, and the Capital City of ministries and jacarandas planned on the rise — with, between them, a genuine wilderness sanctuary where vervet monkeys and the odd crocodile mind their business inside the city line. It is the gentlest of capitals in the country that calls itself, with evidence, the Warm Heart of Africa.

The traveller browses the Old Town market and the craft stalls where Malawian carvers — among the continent's finest — turn hardwood into chief's chairs and chess sets; walks the sanctuary trail between the two centers; eats chambo with nsima the way the lake intended; and then obeys the country's real gravity: Lake Malawi, two hours east, the calendar of beaches and mango villages David Livingstone named the Lake of Stars for the fishermen's lanterns that mirror the sky at night.

The Guide's practical counsel: Lilongwe is a low-rise, low-drama capital — greetings matter, pace is soft, and most wonders are day-trip shaped —; carry small kwacha for markets and mind the usual dusk sense; the maize fields ring the city and set the national mood by rainfall, a thing worth understanding about one's hosts; and the lake rewards more nights than planned — Cape Maclear and Senga Bay convert weekend visitors into week-long ones with regularity this Guide has stopped calling surprising.
