1–2 daysthe bend and the giraffes

Niamey grew where the Niger makes its great bend toward the sea, a low capital of sand-colored blocks and green river gardens, with pinasse boats crossing at dusk and the Sahel breathing at the city limits. An hour east, at Kouré, lives one of conservation's quiet miracles: West Africa's last wild giraffes — a herd that fell to forty-nine animals in the nineties and, protected by the villages that share their acacias, has grown past six hundred.

The traveller who goes — with counsel taken — finds the river the city's best hour: the pinasses at sunset, the market gardens on the banks, the wrestlers — la lutte is the national sport — training on the sand; the Grand Marché's leather and silver; the national museum's honest, sprawling campus; and the Kouré giraffes, visited with local guides whose fees fund the coexistence that saved them. Few wildlife encounters anywhere carry a better story.

The Guide's honesty, gently: the Sahel's winds blow hard over Niger these years — conditions have narrowed since 2023, chancelleries counsel against most travel, and the prudent traveller checks current advice and stays within it: this page, too, keeps a patient lamp —; for those with cause to be there, the city runs on cash, French and Hausa-Zarma greetings, and the heat from March is a physical negotiation: mornings, shade, and the river at six.
