Kigali rolls across its share of the thousand hills in tidy green waves, and the first thing every traveller notices is the order: streets swept, gardens trimmed, plastic bags banned since 2008, moto-taxi drivers in matching green helmets. The order is not an accident and not a decoration — on the last Saturday of every month the whole country turns out for umuganda, the shared morning of community work, and the city you walk is the city its people build by hand, together, twelve times a year.

The Guide lowers its voice at the Genocide Memorial at Gisozi, where a quarter of a million people rest and the country's darkest hundred days of 1994 are told with terrible clarity — go early, go unhurried, and let the gardens do their quiet work afterward. Then the city answers with its life: the women's cooperative walking tours of Nyamirambo, the most flavorful quarter; coffee that wins world prizes served meters from where it grew; imigongo geometry on the walls; and milk bars — yes, milk bars — where the toast is made in kivuguto.

The Guide's practical counsel: Kigali is among the safest, cleanest, easiest capitals on the continent — walkable at dusk, cashless-friendly, punctual —; the hills are real exercise and the light at golden hour earns the climb; and the country is small enough that wonders commute: the Volcanoes and their mountain gorillas three hours north, Nyungwe's canopy walk southwest, Lake Kivu's shore due west. Few pages of this book sit so close to so much.
