Dakar stands on Africa's westernmost point — a peninsula hooked into the Atlantic where the continent takes its last step before the ocean — and fills that geography with more life per block than seems structurally possible: wrestlers training on the beaches at dusk, mbalax pouring out of taxis, markets in full argument, and the smell of thieboudienne, the national rice-and-fish, settling over the city at noon like a benevolent weather system.

The sensible traveller takes the ferry to Gorée and gives the island its due gravity: the House of Slaves and its Door of No Return ask for silence, and the pretty colonial lanes afterward feel like the island exhaling; back on the peninsula — the Renaissance Monument's hill for the whole city, N'Gor's surf and island pirogues, the Plateau's markets, and a dibiterie's grilled lamb wrapped in paper. Teranga, the Senegalese word for hospitality, is not a slogan; it is the operating system.

The Guide's honesty: Gorée is a memorial before it is an outing — dress and act accordingly, and take the island guides' word over the guidebook's —; taxis have no meters: agree the fare with good humor before the door closes; the beach wrestlers welcome watchers, and the ocean's currents deserve respect — swim where the locals swim; and when someone says the fish came in this morning at Soumbédioune, believe them and order it.
