Victoria is the smallest capital in Africa and one of the smallest anywhere — and it is enough. The town fits between granite mornes and a reef-bright harbor: a silver clocktower the Creoles call Lorloz, chiming since 1903 like a Big Ben that chose island life; a market where the dawn's fish arrive with their colors still arguing; Creole houses with lace balconies; and a botanical garden where Aldabra giant tortoises — some older than the clock — graze like patient furniture.

The traveller does the town in an honest morning — clock, market, temple and cathedral, coco de mer nuts in their export cradles — and then obeys the archipelago: the Sainte Anne marine park is minutes offshore by glass-bottom boat; Beau Vallon's long swimming curve lies over the ridge; the Morne Seychellois trails climb through tea and mist; and a ferry away, on Praslin, the Vallée de Mai grows the coco de mer itself — the double coconut, largest seed on Earth, whose shape scandalized centuries of botanists into poetry.

The Guide's practical counsel: the Seychelles are honestly dear — the Guide suggests guesthouses and takeaway Creole curries as the local-approved economy —; the green buses cross Mahé for coins and adventure; Sundays the town rests, so market-day is Saturday's full dress; and the sea is the calendar — April–May and October–November are the glassy windows when the inter-monsoon lets the reefs turn to aquarium.
