Freetown was founded as its name promises: freed and formerly enslaved people came ashore here from 1792 and built a capital under a giant cotton tree, on the world's third-largest natural harbor, beneath the mountains whose lion-shaped roar of cloud gave the whole country its name — Sierra Lyoa. The great tree stood for two hundred thirty years until a storm took it in 2023; the city is raising its successor from cuttings, because here the roots were never only botanical.

The sensible traveller walks the center among the Krio board houses — clapboard architecture carried across the Atlantic and made local —; visits the King's Yard Gate, where the freed walked in, and the national museum's honest telling; takes Lumley beach for the late afternoon with the whole town; and then does what Freetown quietly insists: the peninsula road south, to River No. 2 and Tokeh, beaches so perfect an old chocolate ad chose them to play paradise.

The Guide's honesty: the rains are a season with authority — June to September means waterfalls in the streets: come in the dry months or come amphibious —; okada motorbikes are fast and helmets are your errand; cash rules and the leone counts zeros: confirm prices calmly; the history here is recent and personal — ask gently, listen long; and the warmth is enormous and unfeigned. Sweet Salone, the locals say, and they are right.
