Luang Prabang lies on a tongue of land where the Nam Khan gives itself to the Mekong, and holds more calm per square meter than any town in Asia: thirty-three temples with roofs that sweep nearly to the ground, French villas gone golden with age, and every dawn — before the mist lifts — the tak bat, when the town kneels with rice and the monks file past in a silent orange river. UNESCO protects the buildings; the bells protect everything else.

The sensible traveller wakes once for the alms round and watches from across the street, silent, camera down — or joins properly, with rice bought that morning and shoulders covered —; climbs Phousi at sunset with everyone else, because the Mekong view forgives the company; takes a slow boat upriver to the thousand Buddhas of the Pak Ou caves; swims the milk-blue pools of Kuang Si under the falls; and ends at the night market, where the lamps are low and the indigo is real.

The Guide's honesty: the tak bat is worship, not theater — stand back, kneel if you give, and let the flash sleep —; the town closes early and that is the gift: take the ten-o'clock quiet as prescription, not shortage; bring more cash than you think, the town runs on it; and the curfew of loveliness has one exception — the bowling alley outside town, which is real, absurd and, the Guide reports with a straight face, open late.
