Baghdad was drawn as a perfect circle: in 762 the caliph al-Mansur traced the Round City on the Tigris, and within a century it held the House of Wisdom, where Greek, Persian and Indian learning was translated, argued and improved while Europe slept — algebra took its name here, and the world its numerals. Thirteen centuries of glory and grief later, the city on the river is writing a quieter chapter: cafés reopening, book fairs crowded, the Tigris corniche filling again at dusk.

The traveller's Baghdad runs on Fridays: Mutanabbi Street, the booksellers' row bombed in 2007 and rebuilt in defiance, spreads its volumes on tables while the Shabandar café pours cardamom tea to poets who never surrendered the habit. Add the golden domes of Kadhimiya, the Abbasid palace's brick arches, the national museum's recovered Mesopotamian treasures, and masgouf — river carp split, staked and slow-grilled by the water, the national dish eaten at midnight with the whole family arguing happily.

The Guide's honesty, gently: Iraq's door has been reopening — visas on arrival for many since 2021, religious and cultural travel growing — but conditions still ask real counsel: check your chancellery's current advice, arrange a trusted local operator, and keep plans supple; checkpoints are part of the choreography, so carry papers and patience together. The reward is the least-touristed great city of the Islamic world, and Fridays on Mutanabbi that this page keeps a lamp for.
