Djibouti City is a crossroads that decided to become a country: Somali and Afar, Arabic and French, Yemeni traders, railway men from Addis and sailors from everywhere, gathered on the Gulf of Tadjoura where the Red Sea meets the Indian Ocean's traffic. The port runs day and night; the old town keeps Menelik Square's arcades and the Hamoudi mosque's white minaret; and offshore, between November and February, the largest fish in the sea — whale sharks, gentle as ferries — come to feed in the gulf's plankton bloom.

The traveller snorkels beside those spotted giants with a licensed boat and rules kept — no touching, no chasing —; walks the European quarter's fading arcades and the African quarter's livelier lanes; eats Yemeni-style fish baked in clay ovens with laxoox flatbread; and drives out into geology gone theatrical: Lake Assal, 155 meters below the sea, the lowest point in Africa and one of the saltiest waters on Earth, and Lac Abbé's limestone chimneys steaming on a plain that films use for other planets.

The Guide's practical counsel, honestly: Djibouti is dear — ports and garrisons set the prices — so budget like a sailor on shore leave; the heat from May to September is a physical fact that reorganizes every plan toward dawn and dusk; the afternoon khat pause is the country's own rhythm — note it without judging it, and schedule around it —; and the desert excursions want proper operators, water and a full tank. Small country, big adjectives.
