Addis Ababa — 'new flower' in Amharic — sits at 2,355 meters under the eucalyptus ridges of Entoto, capital of the only African nation never colonized, seat of the African Union, and home of a civilization that counts its own calendar: thirteen months, seven or eight years behind the Gregorian, in 'the country of thirteen months of sunshine.' In the National Museum a small skeleton named Lucy, 3.2 million years old, receives visitors with the patience of a great-grandmother 200,000 generations removed.

The traveller does the essential liturgies: a coffee ceremony — the beans roasted before you, the jebena pot poured three rounds, abol, tona, baraka, and leaving before the third is a small discourtesy —; injera spread like a map and eaten by hand with wot; the Mercato, the continent's largest open-air market, entered light of pocket and heavy of curiosity; Holy Trinity Cathedral and the Red Terror museum for the country's braided griefs; and Entoto's heights for eucalyptus air and the city rolled out below.

The Guide's honesty, gently: the altitude is real — walk day one slowly and sleep before judging the city —; the capital generally keeps its calm, but Ethiopia's regions carry different weathers these years, so journeys beyond — north especially — ask current counsel from your chancellery and local operators before booking; pickpockets work the crowds, so pockets light; and the reward for prudence is one of the deepest cultures a traveller can sit down inside — three cups deep, at minimum.
