Kabul has been a city for three and a half thousand years — a garden capital on the road between Persia and India, loved by emperors who could have rested anywhere: Babur, who took Delhi and founded a dynasty, asked to be buried here, in a terraced garden above the river, under the mountains that stand around the city like witnesses. Her soul is stubborn and airborne: when kites were banned, the day the ban fell the sky filled again within hours — pomegranate trees, poets, and paper birds over the rooftops.

This postal is written in the house's most careful hand: war and hard rule have made Kabul unreachable for the ordinary traveller, and the Guide does not send travellers where their safety cannot be promised nor their presence be a kindness. What we counsel is support from afar: read her novelists and her poets, learn the history that explains the mornings, and remember that a city is not a headline — a city is its people, and these have endured more than most and kept the kites flying.

The Guide's honesty, which here is a vow held gently: this page is a promise. If the mornings one day belong to schoolchildren and fruit sellers and nothing louder, the doors below will fill like all the others — the gardens of Babur first. Few peoples on Earth have earned ordinary mornings more thoroughly. Until then the postal stands, and the Guide keeps the harbor on the map, lamps lit.
