Hanoi arranges a thousand years of history around a lake with a turtle legend at the bottom: the Old Quarter's thirty-six streets still carry their guild names — Silk Street, Silver Street, Bamboo Street — and their sidewalks carry the whole city: phở pots at dawn, plastic-stool cafés by noon, motorbikes flowing like water around anyone brave enough to step in. The French left boulevards and shutters; Vietnam kept them and added ten million scooters.

The sensible traveller circles Hoan Kiem at six in the morning, when the tai chi generation owns the shore; learns that crossing the street is an act of faith performed at constant speed; eats phở where the broth has been running longer than the government; drinks egg coffee in a hidden upstairs café; watches the sunset from West Lake's pagoda shore; and sits at Train Street's rail-side cafés only when the schedule says the walls are not about to move.

The Guide's honesty: the traffic is a river — never step back, never run, let it read you —; the Old Quarter quotes tourist prices with a straight face: smile and halve; the mausoleum has a dress code, closes Mondays, and the lines of visiting schoolchildren are the real monument; and Hanoi's best table is eight inches tall on a sidewalk — if the stool is plastic and the pot is old, sit down.
