Pristina is Europe's youngest capital and statistically one of her youngest cities, and it shows in the best way: the evening xhiro fills Mother Teresa Boulevard with three generations walking nowhere in particular; the macchiato culture would embarrass Milan — order one and understand —; and the National Library wears a crown of domes and a chainmail of lattice that critics have called everything, while the students inside just call it theirs.

The sensible traveller walks the boulevard at seven with everyone else, photographs the NEWBORN monument — repainted each February for the birthday of a country younger than most telephones —, breakfasts on burek in the old bazaar's bustle, visits the Emin Gjiku ethnographic house for the Ottoman city that was, and takes a Sunday hour in Germia's oak forest, where the capital keeps her lungs. Prizren's stone bridge waits an hour southwest — Kosovo is a country of short distances and long welcomes.

The Guide's honesty: the macchiato costs one euro and comes with an invitation to stay — accept it: the cafés are where the young country writes itself —; the euro is the currency though the EU membership is still homework; some powers don't recognize the passport, but the visitor needs only their own; and hospitality here has Ottoman roots and mountain rules: guests outrank schedules. Plan accordingly, and gladly.
