Bethlehem

Bethlehem is the town of the grotto: on the hill ten kilometres south of Jerusalem, in the West Bank, the Basilica of the Nativity — begun by Constantine over the cave in 326, rebuilt by Justinian, entered through a door lowered to a stoop to keep out horsemen, its mosaics newly cleaned — stands over the silver star that marks the place Christians hold as the birthplace of Jesus, and around it Manger Square holds the Franciscan church of St Catherine where the Midnight Mass is sung to the world each Christmas Eve, the Mosque of Omar across the paving, and the Star Street of the pilgrims' entrance climbing through the old town's souk past the olive-wood carvers. Beyond the square: the Milk Grotto down the lane; Shepherds' Field at Beit Sahour, two kilometres east; Herod's fortress-tomb of the Herodium on its cone to the south-east; the monastery of Mar Saba clinging to the Kidron gorge; Solomon's Pools at Artas — and, to the north, the wall: eight metres of concrete with the checkpoint 300, the Aida camp behind it, Rachel's Tomb walled into an enclave, and the murals and the Walled Off Hotel that Banksy left. A UNESCO site since 2012, it is Palestine's most visited town and, since 2023, one of its emptiest; this page and Jerusalem's are held by the Guide together, in dignity.

The traveller who has cause to be there comes from Jerusalem through the checkpoint by bus or with a Palestinian driver, and gives Bethlehem the day the pilgrims give it: the basilica early, through the Door of Humility, down the steps to the grotto and the star before the groups; St Catherine's cloister; the square and Star Street up through the souk to the carvers' shops; the Milk Grotto; lunch of maqluba or musakhan at a family restaurant; the afternoon at Shepherds' Field, or out to the Herodium's summit for the view to the Dead Sea, or to Mar Saba's gate; and the wall on the way back, walked along with a local guide who tells what it means, and the Walled Off's small museum. On Christmas Eve, when the town can hold it, the Patriarch's procession enters the square at noon and the Mass is at midnight.

The Guide's honesty, gently: the conflict is real and present-tense here as in Jerusalem — access to the town, the holy places and the checkpoints changes with little notice, the tourism that fed the town has fallen away since 2023, and the prudent traveller checks their chancellery's counsel the week they go, travels with a Palestinian guide or driver who knows the day's roads, and carries a passport at every gate; the town is warm and its welcome is real and its need is real; the basilica belongs to three churches who share it by an old and delicate rule; and the grotto at seven in the morning, with a nun kneeling at the star and the lamps lit, is one of the quiet centres of the world, which is why the Guide holds this page in the same double dignity as its sister's.
