Tarawa is a right angle of coral a few hundred meters wide, capital of the only nation on Earth that lives in all four hemispheres — Kiribati straddles both the equator and the 180th meridian, and by a sovereign act of timekeeping its islands greet each calendar day before anyone else alive. Life happens in the maneaba, the great thatched meeting house whose roof shelters the whole village and whose etiquette — where to sit, when to speak — is the constitution that matters.

The traveller joins the lagoon's rhythm: canoes with crab-claw sails working the flat, children diving from the causeways, dancing in which arms become frigatebirds — the national bird that rides the trade winds without landing for weeks. At Betio, the 1943 battle that made this atoll a name in military histories is held in rusted guns and quiet memorials; the Guide holds it in dignity, as the islanders do, between the fishing boats and the church choirs.

The Guide's honesty, held with special love: the tide writes Kiribati's calendar too — king tides cross the road some months, the nation has bought land abroad against the ocean's ambitions, and its voice in the climate forums is among the clearest on Earth —; the traveller comes gently and prepared: flights are few, lodgings simple, cash essential, water precious. The atlas's vow stands here as on every ring: whatever the ocean decides, this page keeps its lamp — lit first, each morning, before anywhere else.
