Paramaribo is an experiment that turned out beautiful: a Dutch city of black-and-white wood planted in the tropics, where a mosque and a synagogue share a wall and a parking lot, and Sranan Tongo weaves what five continents brought into a single tongue. UNESCO keeps the old town; the Suriname River holds up its mirror.

The sensible traveller walks the Waterkant and Fort Zeelandia in first light, when the white wood glows; crosses the central market — half fair, half masterclass in spices —; and takes a boat in the afternoon to watch the city float on its river. On Sunday at dawn, with luck, the birdsong contests appear in the squares: cages, whistles and gentle wagers.

The Guide's honesty: Paramaribo is sweet and brief — two days honor her — and the rest of the country is jungle with river names: Brownsberg, the upper Suriname, the Maroon villages that keep Africa alive in America. Book the upriver journey with the communities' own operators: better travel, better justice.
